Coal miner questioned

Wyndham Council will write to mining company Regal Resources seeking an outline of its intentions in an exploration area covering Werribee South, Williams Landing, Tarneit, Truganina and Mount Cottrell. The company last week sought to renew a licence to search for brown coal in an area spanning most of Wyndham. The licence expired after being held for 12 years by Western Victoria Energy, a subsidiary of Melbourne-based Regal Resources which applied to the Department of Primary Industries to have the licence rolled over. The DPI says the company is not permitted to extract anything greater than small samples without applying for a full mining licence.

Teen facing charges

A Hoppers Crossing teen, 18, has been charged after police alleged he pulled a knife on a man last week. The victim told police he caught a teen about 9.20pm on September 16 stealing valuables from his car in Globe Alley in Melbourne’s CBD. Police said the victim followed the teen to Little Bourke Street, where the teen pulled out a knife. Several witnesses saw the incident and called police, who arrived within one minute and arrested the teen. He has been charged with various counts including theft from a motor vehicle, threatening to inflict serious injury, possessing a dangerous article and possessing a controlled weapon. He was remanded in custody.

Edible gardens get thumbs up

Green thumbs are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and make over the Wyndham Community and Education Centre this Saturday. The centre won a ‘permablitz’ competition organised by Wyndham Council and Shoestring Gardening, a not-for-profit organisation which encourages backyard food gardens. A permablitz involves volunteers working together for a day to create an edible garden. Registrations can be made on the day with lunch and refreshments provided. The free event includes workshops on planting fruit trees and building raised beds. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gardening gloves and tools. The event is at the centre, 31 Jellicoe Street, Werribee, from 10am-4pm.
