Mercy centre will bring units together

WORK has begun on a new rehabilitation centre and geriatric unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital.

The community rehabilitation centre and geriatric evaluation management unit is in front of the main hospital building and will provide a range of public services.

Mercy Public Hospitals executive director Linda Mellors said the centre would bring aged, rehabilitation and disability care under one roof.

“By placing the centre in front of the hospital, we aim to improve access for people who do not require overnight stays for medical treatment.

“One of the main benefits to patients is that they will be able to receive treatment locally rather than being referred to other clinics and health services.”

Dr Mellors pledged that “every effort” would be made to minimise the impact of building work on patients, neighbouring businesses and residents.

“There will be no disruption to regular health services.

“We have been in contact with the council and our immediate neighbours in the lead-up to this project. Construction will continue until October 2013 and the local community will be kept informed as it progresses.”

Temporary fencing will change access to the hospital. On-site signs and information sheets will be available at key entrances to help patients, visitors and employees.
