Friends geared for Wyndham’s yesteryear

HOW would you like to dress up in period costume and bring an important part of Wyndham’s rich cultural history to life?

Friends of Werribee Park has opportunities available to support its gardening and interpretation programs.

Volunteers help re-create a bygone era celebrating the city’s pioneering Chirnside family, who lived in the stunning 60-room mansion in the late 1800s. The group helps preserve the heritage and natural flora and fauna of the 140-hectare park and to educate visitors about its important place in Victoria’s history.

Friends president Lesley Knights joined four years ago and has enjoyed every minute.

“I’m a widow, so I was looking for a social outlet and to meet new people,” she said.

“We [the volunteers] go out for lunches together and we’re all passionate about what we do.

“It’s surprising how many people, even locals, still don’t realise this amazing place we have in our own backyard. We often have families who come along for picnics and visitors from all around the world.”

Volunteers must be over the age of 16, pay a small annual fee and provide 10 hours work every two months. No experience required.
