Ways to beat the quiet thief of sight

Imagine not being able to see clearly the faces of friends and loved ones, or not being able to see whether the cup you’re about to drink from is clean.

Cataracts, glaucoma, macula degeneration and diabetic eye disease are all very common eye problems that can ruin vision, but Dr Jared Mee of Wyndham Eye Specialists in Werribee says he’s able to help.

“Cataract surgery is quick, safe and easy to tolerate. After surgery my patients often say they can see better than they have in many years,” he explains.

“Our clinic is well equipped with the latest technology to treat a wide range of eye problems. We have several different lasers, retinal photography, macula OCT and visual field machines on site.

“We have the equipment to do injections for wet macular degeneration and diabetic macula swelling right here in our rooms. With these injections we are seeing some wonderful results that were just not possible a few years ago.”

Dr Mee says glaucoma is the quiet thief of sight.

“If you have a history of glaucoma you should get your eyes checked regularly. Regular eye checks, glaucoma drops and laser can generally keep the eye pressure down and prevent blindness.”

Occasionally glaucoma can be an urgent problem.

“A middle-aged lady came to see me recently with a painful, blurry eye. She had acute glaucoma with very high eye pressure.

“I gave her pressure-lowering eyedrops and immediately performed iris laser to relieve the pressure. Without that treatment her eye would have been permanently blinded within a few days.”

Dr Mee works with his practice manager, Melissa Imrie, to care for people with cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and many other eye problems.

He has been practising in Werribee for six years, but opened newly renovated premises in February. It’s a nice friendly practice with caring staff, he says, and has ample free parking.
