Stopping the thieves

THE high cost of petrol could be fuelling number plate thefts and drive-offs at petrol stations in Wyndham, police say.

Crime prevention officer Craig McDonald said there had been a 33 per cent increase in the theft of number plates in the past year. Some drivers were also using stolen plates to avoid paying tolls on CityLink and EastLink.

To help combat the problem, police are teaming up with Werribee Apex Club to fit one-way screws to plates.

“If we can secure as many number plates as we can, it will make it harder to steal them,” Leading Senior Constable McDonald said.

Screws will be fitted to cars for a gold coin donation between 10am-2pm on Sunday at the Beaurepaires car park at 92 Watton Street, Werribee.
