Students bed down for the night

STUDENTS from Thomas Carr College swapped their beds for the floor of the school hall on Friday night to help tackle homelessness.

The school’s Young Vinnies group organised a winter sleepout to boost St Vincent de Paul’s supplies of canned food, winter clothing and blankets.

About 55 students and 18 teachers took part, along with representatives from youth groups from St Peters and St James churches. The event is designed to give participants an idea of what it’s like to sleep on the streets.

Year 10 social justice captain Stephanie Burgio said students organised the sleepout because they wanted to help.

“We knew about the winter sleepout appeal and thought it was something we could help out with. We all like promoting good causes.”

Year 11 liturgy captain Chloe-Jean Adriano said the group hoped it would become an annual event. “We wanted to raise awareness as a college and show the community that we are doing our part to help those in need. We wanted people to experience what homeless people go through.”
