Language grows as hands get dirty

KAREN migrants are learning English while getting their hands dirty in Werribee.

A group of 18 students (pictured with park president Bob Fairclough) meet weekly at a small plot at Werribee Environmental Community Park as part of Victoria University’s English as a Second Language program.

ESL co-ordinator Veronika Viera-Velicka says teaching English through horticulture takes a hands-on approach.

“They’re all fully engaged, really enjoying the course and getting the practical knowledge that helps their confidence.”
