Ramadan dinner a fast path to breaking down barriers

A Wyndham youth group is hoping its annual Ramadan dinner will help bridge the gap between the wider community and Muslim groups.

Saturday’s dinner is being organised by Youth Victoria, a Hoppers Crossing-based Muslim youth initiative.

Member Rashid Alshakshir says the dinner is a chance for the wider community to learn Muslim customs and beliefs.

“There is no other way that the wider community can meet with Muslims and talk to them in a normal environment,” he says.

“Ramadan is really special to the Muslim community and it is a chance to include the wider community in something that is special to the Muslim community.” The free dinner is the only one of its kind in the western suburbs, with more than 200 people expected to attend.

Mr Alshakshir says this year’s dinner has attracted huge interest and should be the biggest yet. Youth Victoria hopes the dinner will also engage Muslim youths and help them become active members of the wider community.

The dinner is at Central Park Community Centre, 80 Lonsdale Circuit, Hoppers Crossing. Details: 0425856657
