THE search for unmapped graves buried deep below the surface of the historic Werribee Cemetery has begun.
Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, which manages the cemetery, commissioned the search after recent exploratory digs found previously unmapped burial sites.
It’s believed the graves date back to Werribee’s early settlement.
Geologist Andrew Buchel began scanning the cemetery for unmapped graves last week with the help of a mobile radar unit.
The ground-penetrating radar technology will be used to probe 900millimetres below the surface for any coffin-shaped disturbances.
