LITTLE River’s Mark Anthony has produced Australia’s best judo result at an Olympic Games since Athens.
The 22-year-old pulled off one of the shocks of the men’s -90kg event in beating Georgia’s sixth-ranked entrant Vartam Liparteliani in the round of 16.
Anthony moved into a quarter-final bout with Cuba’s Asley Gonzales, but lost a tight contest after receiving two warnings for non-combativity.
He then faced Greek Illias Illiadis in the repechage, but was beaten in just 40 seconds after a perfectly executed throw.
Illiadis is the No. 1 ranked player at the tournament and has been world champion on two occasions.
Anthony’s final placing was a credible seventh overall.
