Wyndham Business Awards: Glass art clearly shines

SUSANNE Jensen’s Glass, a Werribee South gallery that opened in March 2011, is not just a place that exhibits and sells beautiful things. It’s a finalist in the arts and entertainment category of this year’s Wyndham Business Awards.

Born in Denmark, Susanne Jensen has been an artist for most of her life. She spent time in England and the US before coming to Australia in 1992.

“My mother was very artistic and introduced my sister and I to many kinds of self-expression,” she says.

“I was always drawing or painting but when my sister, who is still in Denmark, began to work with glass I got really interested.”

Jensen says glass is a versatile and fascinating material with endless possibilities. Her pieces, using mainly bullseye glass for a striking colour palette, range from jewellery, figurines, platters and bowls to showpieces and keepsakes.

“Some pieces are made to put smiles on faces; they’re a bit surrealistic and quirky, but original and always a talking point.”

Jensen’s works are part of a group exhibition at Wyndham Arts Centre, August 15-September 30.

Local will feature various media, from painting and pottery to jewellery and glass.

The gallery is at 31 Beach Road, Werribee. Details: 0400042624 susannejensenglass.com.
