Wyndham Park: Opinion divided on shared name

WYNDHAM Council has come under fire after its decision to name the city’s newest community centre ‘Wyndham Park’.

Councillors last week voted to name the community centre on Kookaburra Avenue, Werribee, the Wyndham Park Community Centre.

A report to the council said the name was supported by 27 of the 32 people who took part in a consultation process.

The report found Wyndham Park Community Centre to be a suitable name because of its location next to Wyndham Park Primary School.

But objectors said the name would be confusing for residents and emergency services as there was already a park in Werribee’s CBD called Wyndham Park.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow said naming the community centre Wyndham Park had the potential to make things difficult for residents and triple-0 operators.

“You can’t have two places named the same. It will cause confusion,” he said.

Other objectors believed Wyndham Park did not reflect the area and wanted Heathdale included in the name.

However, Heathdale resident Maggie McInnes said she understood why the name was chosen.

“In my heart I would like it to be Heathdale, but this is a new centre, a new beginning and it needs a new name. I think that Wyndham Park is as good as any name,” she said.

Ms McInnes said Wyndham Park was appropriate because it tied in with the school and the new area.

“The area is still Heathdale so it doesn’t matter what the community centre is called.”
