EVERY Thursday, a few dedicated volunteers step into the studio at Wyndham’s community radio station, WYN-FM, to ensure visually-impaired people and new migrants can keep up to date with the latest news from around the city.
Between noon and 2pm volunteers like Marie Hawker read the latest copy of the Weekly on station 88.9.
“We find the program helps older people who might have trouble reading the newspaper or people starting to learn English,” Mrs Hawker said.
“We let people know what page we are reading and when we are turning to a new page so they can follow with us.”
The program began in 2010 with four announcers.
However, since then volunteer numbers have dwindled, leaving Mrs Hawker, Justine Stevensen and Tim Daniels to do the shows.
Mrs Hawker is hoping more people will realise the value of the show and volunteer to read the newspaper.
“You do a short course to learn what to do. You can just read the paper or you learn to work the panel as well.
“I know some people find it hard being in such a small studio and some people’s voices are not suitable for radio but we are down to the bare bones at the moment.
“We need more volunteers to keep the show going.”
