London 2012: Lauryn Mark ‘gutted’

WERRIBEE Victorian Clay Target Club member Lauryn Mark failed to overcome a bout of nerves on the shooting range at the London Games on Sunday.

The 32-year-old got off to a slow start in the women’s skeet shooting qualification rounds and could not recover, finishing third-last overall with 59 of 75 targets hit at a percentage of 0.787.

It was the first round that proved costly, where Mark hit only 17 of 25.

Overall, it was an uncharacteristic performance from a shooter with three Commonwealth Games gold medals, a fourth placing at the Athens Olympics and victory at last year’s Oceania championships.

US shooter Kimberly Rhode won with a world record 99 hits from 100 attempts. Mark told the press that she will reassess her future in the sport.

First she will focus on cheering on her husband Russell, who will be competing tomorrow night (AEST) in the men’s double trap.

On Twitter, Mark quipped: “After my very disappointing performance, it is time for me to get the pom-poms out and support my wonderful husband.”
