Wyndham Business Awards: What Misfits

ELIZABETH Acevedo and partner Nick Geurts are chuffed to have their fledgling business named as a finalist in the retail-micro category of this year’s Wyndham Business Awards.

The pair began their online business last December. And with a name like Cradle of Misfits it was bound to attract attention.

To make the finalist list though was an unexpected bonus. “It’s great that we’re getting local recognition for our efforts,” Ms Acevedo says.

The Cradle of Misfits online shop has baby outfits designed to challenge the conventional pink and blue, geared towards parents looking for something in the rocker or Goth tradition.

“I became involved in the sub-culture of Goths and metal heads when younger and it’s a lifestyle I still enjoy,” Acevedo explains.

“When I had my daughter, Lileth, I wanted to dress her to reflect my style.

“I work part-time in a science-based career but it doesn’t fulfil me so my mind turned to a business that expressed ‘me’, as well as giving other parents the chance to get clothes not found in mainstream shops.” The funky outfits and accessories are sourced from Australian companies such as The Treasure Tent and Bibska-Bibs, and Rockstar Baby and Sourpuss in the US and appeal to parents with a sense of fun.

“They’re top quality products. If it’s not something I’d dress Lileth in, it doesn’t make it to my shop.”

Werribee Twilight Market is among niche markets to stock the brand.

And the clothing has an environmental angle with products from the Spirithood label donating 10per cent of profits to animal conservation.
