A TRUGANINA resident has called on the council and state government to provide more bus shelters in Wyndham.
Mohammed Isah, who will stand as a Truganina ward candidate in October’s council elections, said recent weather had highlighted the need for shelters at bus stops in Point Cook and Truganina.
“Every time it rains you can drive down Sneydes Road, Sayers Road or Boardwalk Boulevard and see scores of commuters getting soaked to the bone,” Mr Isah said.
“Mums, dads and children shouldn’t be forced to stand in the rain to get where they are going.”
As reported by the Weekly, Westbourne Grammar, Thomas Carr College and Al-Taqwa College last month asked the council to consider funding bus shelters on Sayers Road as part of its 2012-13 budget. Westbourne Grammar deputy principal Jim Mitchell said the lack of bus shelters meant students were getting soaked travelling to and from school in winter.
Mayor Kim McAliney said providing bus shelters was the government’s responsibility.
She said the council was aware of the problems facing Wyndham commuters and was working to get more shelters in the city.
A spokeswoman for Public Transport Victoria said while the department funded and maintained bus shelters across Wyndham, it was up to the council to nominate priority sites.
“There are currently 59 bus shelters in Wyndham, with funding allocated for a further 15 shelters in the coming year,” the spokeswoman said.
“The council will nominate priority sites for these 15 new shelters.”
