Werribee Mercy’s $14m worth of care

NEW mother Stephanie Zahra (pictured with mayor Kim McAliney) has seen a lot of changes at Werribee Mercy Hospital since her daughter Elle was born 14 weeks ago.

When Elle was born on April 3, at just 25 weeks, the hospital’s maternity unit was in the final stages of a $14million expansion.

Three months on, work is finished and the unit now includes antenatal and postnatal areas and 32 beds. There is also a special care nursery for 16 babies, where Elle has been looked after since she was born.

Cr McAliney last week toured the expanded unit with Mercy’s executive director Linda Mellors to see how the hospital was trying to cope with Wyndham’s population boom.

The expansion will allow the hospital to deliver an extra 800 babies a year.
