Derelict Glen Devon school will hit property values, says neighbour

THE owner of a house next to Glen Devon Primary School has called for the disused site to be cleaned up and put to use before it drags down property values in the area.

Kevin O’Brien bought the house as an investment property two years ago, unaware the school would be closed and merged with Glen Orden Primary School at the end of 2010.

More than 18 months later, the site’s future use is still to be decided on and the buildings have been left in disrepair.

A fire at Glen Devon last November caused significant damage to one wing.

Mr O’Brien urged Wyndham Council and the state and federal governments to remove the “eyesore” and find a use for the Market Road property.

He is concerned that if the land is not cleaned up soon, his property will decrease in value and become difficult to lease out.

“The ground could be used for anything at all. The school is just sitting there, graffitied and boarded up,” he said.

“No one is thinking ahead and no one seems to care.

“It has become a place for kids to hang out and [cause trouble].”

Mr O’Brien has written to Tarneit MP Tim Pallas and Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard, suggesting the site be used for a multi-storey car park.

He believes a car park would help ease parking problems at Werribee railway station.

The council and community groups have previously suggested the site be used for a community education centre.

An education department spokesman said options for the future use of the site were still being considered.
