Hockey Victoria: Werribee on the road to victory

TWO road wins in as many weeks has Werribee starting to talk about promotion in the Hockey Victoria men’s state league 3.

The Tigers are entrenched in the top four after 10 rounds and will be aided by the competition restructure that will see all four finalists join a newly-formed second tier.

Tigers captain Ross Cowlishaw said it had been his team’s intentions from the outset to strive for promotion so it’s not left behind when the divisions were reconfigured.

That goal has been given a real kick-along in recent weeks.

“Everyone loves it when you win on the road,” he said. “You get that real belief.

“It has moved us seven points clear of fifth spot and takes a bit of the pressure off coming home.”

The Tigers are just four points off top spot after a 3-1 mauling of MHSOB at Melbourne High School on Saturday.

They left nothing to chance, breaking the spirit of the hosts with all three goals coming in open play in the first half.

Cowlishaw was first to strike, followed by Sam Huxtable and Andrew Purcell.

He said the benefits of having a loyal playing group was paying dividends. “Bar about two of us, we’ve had the same side for about six years. Everyone knows how each other plays.”

One of the newest additions is goalkeeper Adam Wadley, a former Altona player who has relished the chance to make the net his own.

“He’s very aggressive, keeps our structures in place and speaks to the boys a lot, which is what you want from a goalkeeper.”

The Tigers return home on Saturday for a date with Mornington at Presidents Park.

In the women’s state league 3, Werribee had a commanding 7-0 win over Swinburne.
