Knock-back, but leisure centre plans continue

WYNDHAM Council will continue with plans to redevelop the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre while it considers alternative funding options.

The council learnt two weeks ago it would not receive $15million in funding from Regional Development Australia.

The $61million project is dependent on the council sourcing $20million in external funding. On Monday night, councillors agreed to proceed with the project and advertise for tenders for work on the centre’s southern car park and temporary gymnasium while considering how to fund the redevelopment.

A report is expected to be presented to the July council meeting, outlining financing options available, one of which is likely to be reapplying to Regional Development Australia when the next round of funding opens in October.

Cr Heather Marcus said the council faced difficult decisions and would likely need to review the timing and scope of the project.

She said the city’s rapid growth meant the council needed the financial support of other levels of government. “We are being overlooked so often,” she said.

Cr Bob Fairclough said the council would continue to lobby for better support from state and federal governments.
