Westbourne Grammar’s push on road’s safety

THREE schools are pushing for paved footpaths and bus shelters along Sayers Road, Truganina, as wet weather increases fears over student safety.

Westbourne Grammar lodged a request at Wyndham Council’s 2012-13 budget submission meeting last week with support from nearby Thomas Carr College and Al-Taqwa College.

Deputy principal Jim Mitchell said Sayers Road was unsafe for students to cross because it was wet, uneven and rocky.

“Without bus shelters kids are getting wet and without footpaths they’re put at risk when crossing these dirt roads,” he said. “We’re getting comments from parents all the time, worrying kids will tumble and fall. Everyone knows Sayers Road is terribly dangerous and all schools have agreed.”

He said there was an increasing number of households and three very large schools so the number of pedestrians was growing exponentially.

Thomas Carr College principal Andrew Watson said parents were also worried about students travelling to school, describing Sayers Road as a nightmare.

“What we’re really asking for are general improvements,” Dr Watson said.

“There aren’t even any bus shelters for students and we’ve had a pretty wet winter so far.”

Truganina ward’s Cr Bob Fairclough said he was aware of long-standing concerns about Sayers Road and hoped the council could provide improvements.

“The council has a policy of progressively constructing footpaths throughout the community and we’re working hard to get these completed as soon as possible.”
