WERRIBEE executed a perfect smash-and-grab raid with a 1-0 win over Greater Dandenong Warriors in Hockey Victoria men’s state league 3 at Mills Reserve on Saturday.
The Tigers got a quick goal when young striker Matthew Skoglund sent Warriors’ keeper Paul Don the wrong way five minutes in and record what was the only score for the day.
Tigers captain Ross Cowlishaw said that after a number of unsuccessful trips to Dandenong in recent seasons it was crucial for his side to get on the front foot with an early goal.
“Dandenong at Dandenong is always one of the hardest games,” he said.
“We’ve always had trouble in the past because they’re a really physical team. We got our goal in the first five and did really well to hold on.”
Twice the visitors were down a man due to yellow cards but refused to let it disrupt their desire to create a rare win at an intimidating venue.
Co-coaches Brian Cowie and Russell Skoglund ordered a defensive approach to ensure the Tigers kept their lead.
And why not, when they had in-form sweeper Matt McCubbin, full-back Daniel Collins and tight-checking youngster Josh McDonald on the last line?
The defensive pair was rock solid and goalie Adam Wadley was not forced into too many saves.
A key area for the Tigers was its front third, with its forwards, in particular Huxtable, Luke Simpson and Peter Nalder, applying huge pressure to force the Warriors into mistakes at telling times.
The Tigers, third on the ladder after three consecutive wins, visit MHSOB on Saturday – a side they beat 6-0 in the opening round of the season.
Werribee failed to bridge the gap on the top sides with a 2-1 home loss to Monash University in the women’s state league 3 at President’s Park.
Aimee Tout was the Tigers lone goalscorer.
