VAFA: Tigers routed but star recruit leaps like a Kalang-aroo

WERRIBEE Districts were outplayed for the most part of a 56-point loss to Old Melburnians in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier B at Junction Oval on Saturday.

The Tigers’ positive start to the season is but a fading memory with only one win in the past five rounds.

The Kirk Norton-coached side managed just six goals against the finals contending OM’s, three of them off the boot of Chris Molivas, the lone multiple goalkicker for the visitors.

Adam Morrow, Josh Huxtable and Lachlan Patterson fought hard for the Tigers, but to no avail.

It was not all bad news out of the Queen’s Birthday break for the Tigers. Bol Kalang, who was among their best, impressed so much he was the VAFA’s rising star nomination for last week.

Born in Sudan, Kalang and his family moved to Australia when he was five. He took up football only three years ago but has developed so quickly that he is now the first choice ruckman for the Tigers.

Kalang came through the ranks of the Western Jets, playing a handful of TAC Cup games in his second year. A statement on the Tigers website says: “Bol was encouraged to play senior football after a very strong preseason playing as a forward/ruck.

“His leap, agility and speed allow him to be both an attacking option around the ground pushing forward to create options, whilst still being able to work back quickly to cut off opposition forward thrusts. He has become an excellent addition to a very young and quick Werribee team.”

The Tigers underwent a number of on-field personnel changes and they are one of the younger teams in the division, so a form slump was inevitable.

Still, they are a competitive unit against the more established teams, and sit just one win outside the finals places nearing the halfway point of the season.

Point Cook has hardly put a foot wrong in division 4 since the opening round. The Bulldogs made it six wins from their past seven outings by beating North Brunswick by 44 points at Point Cook Oval on Saturday.

Andrew Maclean, Mark Zammit and Travis Cassidy were superb for the Bulldogs, while target man Aaron Marsh shone with five goals. Keith Kavanagh, a Gaelic football convert from Ireland, continues to impress for the Doggies.
