Foxtel Cup: Werribee Tigers triumph on big stage

WERRIBEE is through to the semi-finals of the Foxtel Cup after it defeated West Perth by 21 points at the MCG on Saturday.

The Tigers, who are the only VFL team left in the competition, overcame a scrappy first half to win 10.7 (67) to 6.10 (46).

Tigers coach Scott West said it was exciting to move forward with the win.

“The conditions were really slippery and it was a more contested game of football.

“It probably isn’t as contested [over in Perth] but with the conditions we both had to adapt.

“You have to get the balance right between contested footy and open play and when we do we play good football.”

Midfielder William Martiniello was the Tigers’ best with 24 possessions and a goal.

West praised the performances of Tom Ruggles and North Melbourne players Robbie Tarrant and Majak Daw.

He said Tarrant, who kicked five in last round’s VFL match, was pushing for a return to the Kangaroos’ line-up.

“That’s the aim, to develop those guys [Kangaroos players] and for them to play senior football.

“Hopefully they play well in our games and that him and others get senior games.”

West said it was a thrill for his side to play on the MCG.

“It was really exciting to get out on the MCG and I know that none of the West Perth players had played there before.

“It was about making sure we didn’t get overawed out there.”

The Tigers will play Morningside in the semi-finals on July 7.

“They beat Port Adelaide so we will have our hands full. They are more of a contested footy side … as the game gets closer we will do a bit more digging.”

This week the Tigers face Sandringham.

“It’s a massive game for us and no matter the competition, we need to play good contested football,” West said.
