THREE people were arrested and more than 100 fines issued during a police crackdown on theft, weapons and drug crimes in Wyndham.
Police saturated Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale, Tarneit and Point Cook last Tuesday and Wednesday, setting up roadblocks to check 346 vehicles as part of Operation Lockdown.
The operation included 30 police from the mounted branch, dog squad and taskforce Acer.
Two people were arrested for outstanding warrants and one person was arrested for theft.
Police issued 101 infringement notices, including seven for driving without a licence, 18 for driving unregistered vehicles and 35 for driving an roadworthy vehicle.
Nine people were caught driving while suspended and 16 were talking on mobile phones while driving.
Using automatic numberplate recognition technology, police also executed 728 warrants with the help of the Sheriff’s office, recovering more than $220,000 in unpaid fines.
Wyndham North’s Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Parish said operations helped keep Wyndham’s roads safe. He said police had identified residential burglaries, hoon driving and theft from cars as being among the city’s biggest crime problems. But crime reduction needed a collaborative effort. “We ask the community to assist us by reporting anything out of place or suspicious.”
