Big V: Werribee Devils closer to victory

ITS been so close but so far for the Werribee Devils in the quest for their first win of the season after suffering a heartbreaking loss against Blackburn in Big V division 2.

Having fought all season to get their first win, the Devils came agonisingly close, losing 83-79 in overtime.

Devils coach Brant Lowry said it was the team’s best performance of the season.

“It was a really good game which was close all night.

“It’s the most points we’ve scored all season. Last time we played them they won by over 30 points.”

Lowry said the team’s experience was the difference between and win and a loss.

“We made a couple of mistakes, which could’ve cost us the game.

“We missed a shot late and took a shot too early. We could the lead early in time on, but just couldn’t hold on.”

He said the team’s consistency had been the biggest thing in the team’s improved performance over the past two weeks.

“We’ve come a long way in the past few weeks.

“We have a core group of players now and after a battle to get players to commit, things are settled.”

Lowry said he didn’t think a win was far away.

“I really thought it was going to be on Saturday night that we would get the win.

“We got Mornington and Western Port over the next few weeks, so hopefully we should be pretty close to it.”

He said Jasmine and Jacqueline Silcock were the best performed for the team.

“Jasmine had her best game so far and they couldn’t stop her from coming down the court. They just kept fouling her and she had 22 free throws.

“Jacqueline shot really well and we don’t normally get a lot of points from her, so it was good to get those extra points.”

The men’s division 1 side came from behind to record a seven-point win over Geelong.

The Devils were five points down at the last change, before scoring 24 points to secure the win. Both sides have a bye this weekend.
