Council candidate wants job to help others work

A TRUGANINA resident will contest the Wyndham Council election in an effort to boost trades training and employment in the municipality.

Intaj Khan, who is the chief executive of the Western Institute of Technology, said he would stand for Truganina ward in October’s election.

He hopes a Victorian Electoral Commission decision to increase the number of councillors in Wyndham from nine to 11 will boost his chances.

Mr Khan said creating job opportunities for young people in Wyndham was one of his main priorities.

“I would likes to see the trades area in Bacchus Marsh replicated in Wyndham,” he said.

“Wyndham is one of the best places to get young talented people who are willing to work, but we need to provide somewhere for them to learn skills and work close to home.”

Another issue for Mr Khan is the inability of many Point Cook residents to access broadband internet. He hopes to lobby the federal government to have the area included on the National Broadband Network rollout as soon as possible.

“Broadband is a technology which is needed in the area,” he said.

“Not having it is disadvantaging people.

“As a council, we need to put more focus on getting that rolled out in Point Cook.”

Mr Khan is the third Wyndham resident to announce they will stand for election.

Greens candidates Bro Sheffield-Brotherton and Eilis Hughes have already declared they will stand in the Chaffey and Iramoo wards respectively.

The council will hold an information session this month for residents interested in becoming a candidate.

The session is at the civic centre from 6.30-9pm on June 27. The election will be held on October 27. Details: vec.vic.gov.au.
