ce taskforce will tackle car theft across Wyndham following a spike in offences.
Recent Victoria Police data shows car break-ins in Wyndham soared by 17.9per cent last year with 1614 in total – more than four cars a day.
Theft of cars also jumped to 455, a 17.9per cent rise.
Police are investigating a series of car break-ins in Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit on May 10. Last Thursday, two cars in the Werribee railway station car park were also broken into.
Inspector Cindy Millen said the high number of break-ins had prompted the taskforce.
“I now have dedicated crew who are targeting this crime category and again targeting recidivist offenders,” she said.
“I would also like to remind our community to ensure they do not leave any valuables in their vehicles, and while out shopping to not leave handbags, phones or wallets on shopping trolleys or on tables.”
New RACV Insurance data reveals cars parked in the western suburbs are at the highest risk of theft, with Wyndham motorists lodging more than 5per cent of the state’s car theft claims.
