Road funding request
A CASH request to build a diamond interchange at Sneydes Road and the freeway could signal the first step in easing Point Cook’s traffic woes, and the start of planning for the long-awaited Werribee Employment Precinct.
The state government’s Growth Areas Authority, VicRoads and Wyndham Council have asked the federal government to chip in more than $20million, about half the cost, to fund the interchange.
Site planning and construction is expected to cost $40.3million, with the remainder to be met by the state and the council. The joint application was lodged through the federal Suburban Jobs Program designed to boost employment in outer-metro suburbs.
GAA chief executive Peter Seamer said that as well as unlocking the 915-hectare employment precinct, the interchange would relieve congestion at the connection to the Princes Freeway.
But federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese’s spokesman Jeff Singleton said the state needed to fulfil its own responsibilities. “We’re pulling our weight and helping where we can, but asking somebody else to fix your problems is not a solution.”
