Wyndham out to show pride in stamping out homophobia

Wyndham’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) community will be celebrated today as part of International Day Against Homophobia.

A flag-raising ceremony and morning tea will be held at the courtyard behind Wyndham Cultural Centre.

The day is recognised in more than 60 countries on May 17, the date in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

Cr Marcel Mahfoud (pictured) says the day is about standing together as a community.

“Although we’ve come a long way, both in Australia and in Wyndham, discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people still occurs.” Details: 97420777.
