Marquands Road repairs months off

MOTORISTS travelling on Marquands Road in Truganina will have to put up with mud and potholes a while longer, with Wyndham Council saying sealing work won’t start until later this year.

As reported in the Weekly, Marquands Road was closed for a day last month after four days of rain made it unsafe to drive on.

Tarneit resident David Idda, who uses the unsealed road to take his son to school, complained on April 26 about its condition.

He described the road as “diabolical” and riddled with potholes that drivers had to zig-zag around to avoid damaging cars.

Mayor Kim McAliney, who used Marquands Road on the same day, said she immediately called the council to have the road closed. She said it needed to be fixed as soon as possible.

“As far as I am concerned, fixing it is a top priority,” she said, “but it is just a case of getting the tenders out. Developer contributions have held [the work] up.”

The council’s acting chief executive Steven Lambert said a tender for sealing the road was scheduled to be advertised in the middle of this year, with work to start later in the year. It will be completed by early next year, depending on the commissioning of traffic signals for the intersection of Leakes and Marquands roads.

“The design work for the intersection has taken time because of constraints with existing infrastructure such as power poles and aspects of land ownership,” Mr Lambert said.

“The design works have also had to work around the construction of a signalised intersection at Forsyth and Leakes Road, 100metres to the east.”

Marquands Road is graded fortnightly.
