GDNL: Werribee Centrals win, for real

WERRIBEE Centrals saluted for their second win of the Geelong and District Netball League A grade season, but it was their first premiership points.

The previous week’s spoils of victory were stripped from the club due to an administrative error.

The Centrals had endured a bumpy opening two weeks under new coach Nicole Stewart, losing the season opener to Bell Post Hill in a thriller and being told their win over East Geelong was abolished because the name of young star Maria Mesei was not written on the scorer’s sheet.

Centrals goaler Jenni Gardner said the 0-2 record and equal share of bottom spot on the ladder did not sit well with her team and was the catalyst for a 50-24 thumping of Inverleigh in the third round on Saturday.

“We really wanted to come out this week to prove that we don’t deserve to be on the bottom of the ladder and we are a strong contender for finals this year,” she said.

The Centrals have a new-look squad as they aim to go one step better than recent grand final appearances.

They were finally running on all cylinders as they crushed Inverleigh.

“We were strong everywhere on the court,” Gardner said. “Our defence was fantastic. There was a lot of pressure and a lot of talk.

“Our mid-court players were bringing the ball down and feeding well.”

Gardner was a constant threat in the attacking circle with 32 goals.

Goal attack Rebecca Lally put it through the hoop 18 times.

The Centrals will be out to make it back-to-back wins when they entertain Corio at Galvin Park on Saturday.
