Davis House: Removalist swoops in to save history

A WESTERN suburbs removalist believes it can help end the long-running battle over Werribee’s historic Davis House.

Moving Views owner Carmen Schembri told the Weekly she would like the chance to relocate the heritage house to allow its Watton Street site to be redeveloped.

Ms Schembri said she had seen the house from the outside and believed it could be saved from demolition and restored.

“I would like the opportunity to look at the house and see how much work needs to be done and if it can be relocated.

“We would like to salvage this beautiful house.”

Last year, Wyndham Council approved a demolition permit for the house subject to a number of conditions, including that the developer delay demolition for 12 months and in that time attempt to relocate the building.

The Wyndham Heritage Recovery Group has since urged the council to reverse its decision, raising concerns about the house’s ongoing maintenance. The council rejected the group’s concerns, saying the developer had to date complied with all the conditions attached to the permit.

Mrs Schembri said she believed her company could help satisfy all parties.

“It is clear there are a lot of people passionate about the house. This is a way to keep the community happy,” she said.

However, there was no guarantee the house would remain in Werribee.
