WRFL: Wyndhamvale’s missed chances costly

WYNDHAMVALE was one of the pre-season fancies to challenge for the Western Region Football League division 2 flag but has so far drawn blanks in its first two home-and-away matches.

The Falcons had only themselves to blame for a 12-point defeat to Coburg Districts on home turf at Wyndhamvale Reserve on Saturday as they frittered away a multitude of chances in front of goal.

Falcons playing football manager Nathan Evans told the Weekly his side had the lion’s share of statistical categories only to be let down by missed opportunities that saw them convert just six of 19 scoring shots into majors.

“We actually played quite well,” he said.

“We had more scoring shots, more of the ball, more inside 50s, more tackles.

“We were just behind on the scoreboard, the one that counts.” Evans insists the Falcons are still on the “right track” despite an 0-2 start.

A number of additional factors on top of their failure to convert had a negative effect.

Their usual fast run-on style of play has been stifled by canny opponents slowing down the play.

It is an area the Falcons coaching staff will look to improve with a plan B in the coming weeks in order to get the game back to being played on their own terms.

The Falcons have struggled, at times, to match the hunger of the opposition teams, who see them as a big scalp.

They are yet to field their strongest side with injuries holding some of their key players back.

All this has led to a duck egg in the wins column but there are calls for calm.

“Premierships aren’t won in April,” Evans said.

“We’re got a lot of the season to go and we still think we’ll go all right.

“We’ve probably got to learn that we will be the hunted this year and not the hunters and it’s something we’ve got to adapt to.

“Everyone saw our run coming into the finals and during finals last year, so the natural progression from most other clubs about us is to say that we’ll be up there again.”

The Falcons will go into Saturday’s hugely anticipated local derby with .
