OF all the growth pains that plague Point Cook, few would boil the blood more than the notorious peak-hour bottleneck on Point Cook Road.
Traffic snarls are causing gridlock so bad it takes some residents an hour just to get out of the suburb.
According to the council’s 2011 traffic volumes report, Point Cook Road is carrying 22,170 vehicles a day, up from 16,850 in 2007.
It lists Point Cook Road as being in urgent need of duplication, along with several other arterial roads being pushed to bursting point.
But VicRoads acting regional director Damien Axfentis said there were “no plans” on the horizon to upgrade the road. For Point Cook resident Cheree Robinson, the traffic squeeze on Point Cook Road is too much to handle. “If you didn’t have to go along that road, why would you?
“A real problem is Point Cook Road during the school afternoon pick-up time, when the drive from Seabrook Primary to Sanctuary Lakes shopping centre takes more than 30 minutes when it’s only two kilometres.”
Ms Robinson said her husband recently changed jobs so he didn’t have to endure the torturous drive along Point Cook Road to get onto the freeway any more.
