Big V: Werribee Devils give Vikings hell of a time

WERRIBEE Devils strangled the life out of Blackburn Vikings for a cruisy 86-45 win on the road in the Victorian Basketball League Big V men’s division 1 at Fairhills High School on Saturday.

The Devils hardly gave the hosts room to breathe with their stifling defensive tactics and it became a potent mix when combined with a field goal percentage that improved quarter by quarter.

The win moves the Devils to 3-1 and into third in the Terril pool. They are fourth overall in division 1.

Young gun Jordan Hughes was nigh on impossible to blanket. He had 31 points and seven rebounds and was a thief on defence with four steals.

Cirook Riak and Muka Silver took advantage of their limited court time.

Riak finished with a double 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Silver had 12 points and eight rebounds with five of those on the offensive end allowing his side a double dip at the shot clock.

The Devils will host Warrnambool in a blockbuster at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday night. In the women’s division 2, it was the Devils who had the squeeze put on them in a disappointing 66-32 loss to Blackburn. The Devils were pitiful in the first half, scoring just seven points on 3-of-31 shooting. They fared a little better in the second half but were never seriously in contention after trailing by 23 points.

Tarhnie Brown had an impressive stats line with 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
