WYNDHAM Vale’s Rebecca Mundi has a dream to make a difference.
In July, the La Trobe university student will fly to a small village in Zululand, South Africa for two weeks as part of her volunteer work with charity Reach Out.
While there, Ms Mundi will help build and repair essential infrastructure and track endangered species at a game reserve.
She became involved in the Zululand project after representatives visited her university and made presentations at three of her lectures.
That night, Ms Mundi signed up for the trip (her first one overseas), paid her deposit, and was eager to help those less fortunate.
“The idea [of helping people] has always been there but I’ve mainly been putting money in charity boxes because it’s easy to do. This way I can actually see the outcome and feel like I’m making a difference in the world.
“I like the idea of actually being able to participate in the project.”
Ms Mundi will spend the first week helping build a preschool for children who are currently taught under a tree.
She will teach the children, many who’ve been affected by AIDS, about hygiene and help them learn English.
In week two she will track and monitor endangered species, like the black rhino, at a game reserve.
Ms Mundi is asking people to donate money to help Reach Out make a difference to the community.
“It’s always nice to take some money to give to the village so they have something.”
