Dream journey for high-flying Sam

IT’S a good thing Sam Bognar isn’t afraid of heights. Sam, 14, is only weeks away from flying to Florida on her first overseas trip, where she’ll represent Australia by standing atop a human pyramid and being hurled into the air.

Sam has been chosen as the youngest member of the Australian all-girls cheerleading team, ‘Dreamgirls’ and secured a place competing in next month’s World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando.

“I love the feeling of going up in the air, and I love competing on stage in front of all these people who love cheerleading as well,” says the Point Cook teen.

“I love the feeling when you come off the floor and you’ve hit all your stunts, and I love training hard for it.”

There will be no easing of Sam’s training regime in the lead-up to the championships, with practise three hours a day, three days a week.

“You have to be dedicated and committed,” says Sam, who also competes with Werribee’s Southern Cross Cheerleading. “I’m really nervous, but I think we can make the top 10.”
