Wyndham youth voice big issues

TRANSPORT, bullying and road safety have been named as some of the biggest issues facing Wyndham’s youth.

More than 100 students from 10 Wyndham schools joined the council’s annual youth forum last Tuesday to talk to the city’s leaders about problems facing young people.

The forum also discussed mental health issues and a lack of youth activities in Point Cook, Wyndham Vale and Tarneit.

Mayor Kim McAliney said students weren’t afraid to challenge councillors and staff on important issues.

Information collected at the forum will be presented at a future council meeting and help develop a council youth plan.

It will also guide police efforts to make young people feel safer.

Werribee police community liaison officer, Leading Senior Constable Dawn Youla, said students spoke about public transport safety and late-night loitering at fast-food restaurants.

“The forum is our way of empowering young people to voice their concerns, and for them to know these issues are not falling on deaf ears,” she said.
