Hospital honour for Wyndham policeman

A REFURBISHED emergency department at Footscray’s Western Hospital is to be named in honour of a Wyndham police officer killed on duty in 1997.

The Westgate branch of the Blue Ribbon Foundation hopes to raise $125,000 to refurbish the ward and name it after Senior Constable Timothy Lewczuk, who

was killed when he was struck after pulling over a motorist on the Western Ring Road in Ardeer.

For his parents, Dot and Richard Lewczuk, the naming of the ward in memory of their son is a great honour.

Mrs Lewczuk said she was proud of her son’s contribution to the western suburbs, having been stationed at Newport, Flemington, Brunswick, St Albans and Moonee Ponds.

He also made a contribution to the Hoppers Crossing community, playing for football, basketball and cricket clubs and attending Mossfiel and Woodville primary schools and Galvin Park Secondary College.

Mrs Lewczuk hopes Wyndham residents will help the foundation raise enough money to refurbish the ward by taking part in a trivia night next weekend. The foundation has so far raised $100,000.

“It was important to us to have a fund-raiser locally. There have been ones in Melton and other areas but no one there knew Tim personally. People here would have known him as a kid growing up,” Mrs Lewczuk said.

“It is sad what happened but it nice to know his memory lives on.”

The trivia night is on March 30 at the Werribee Central Sports Club, Shaws Road, Werribee, from 7pm. Bookings: email csi@citywestwater.com.au or call 0407857722.
