WYNDHAM residents are being offered a free security checklist to help keep their homes safe from thieves.
The list has been put together by Wyndham crime prevention officer Craig McDonald. Residents are being asked to answer 30 security questions about their homes.
If they answer no to any of the questions, homeowners are sent a Victoria Police residential information kit which lists ways to increase home security and personal safety.
The checklist is being provided after crime statistics revealed residential burglaries in Wyndham increased by almost 30per cent in 2011 as compared to the previous year.
Leading Senior Constable McDonald said the list would help people protect their homes without spending their life savings on security. “Victims have a much less chance of becoming a repeat victim of crime if they take the advice of the checklist to protect themselves and their property,” he said.
“Too many people don’t take action on obvious and visible security problems such as faulty locks, security doors, sensor lights, grills on windows and smoke detectors.”
A business information kit is also available to help business owners protect commercial premises from burglaries. Details: 97429444.
