Weerama Festival: City pride takes centre stage

NOBODY was more relieved to see the sun shining over Wyndham on Sunday than the organisers of the annual Weerama Festival.

Saturday’s continuous rain led to smaller crowd numbers for the children’s fun festival at Chirnside Park, but festival director Warrick Lynch was pleased to see people brave the wet conditions to watch the fireworks display that night.

Sunday’s events drew bigger crowds, with thousands of people lining Watton Street for the highlight of the festival — the street parade.

Mr Lynch said the parade was one of the biggest yet, taking more than an hour to make its way down the street.

Included in the parade were representatives from Wyndham’s schools, sporting clubs, emergency services and dance and multicultural groups.

‘‘The parade was huge this year. It was good to see so many groups taking part,’’ he said.

‘‘Everyone was happy and [there was] smiling faces on Sunday which was great after the damp weather and faces on Saturday.

‘‘Everyone who came along still enjoyed themselves on Saturday but not as much as they could have.’’

A new addition to this year’s festival was a flash mob, which surprised festival-goers by staging an impromptu Bollywood-themed dance on Sunday.

Mr Lynch said organisers had tried to keep the flash mob a secret from the community and was thrilled by people’s reactions to the surprise performance.

The weekend’s other activities, including the W Factor talent competition, carnival rides and children’s zone, were also well received.
