Big V: Melton rebounds for split

MELTON Thoroughbreds split their weekend double header after bouncing back from a Saturday night defeat against Horsham to down Pakenham on Sunday in Big V basketball division two.

The 81-64 win away at Pakenham on Sunday means Melton has three wins and two losses in fifth place on the 11-team table.

Saturday night proved a tough test as Melton gave up a 12-point half-time lead against Horsham to lose 72-68.

The Thoroughbreds had an even spread of scorers with Jeff Crowe (11), Martin Pietrykowski (11) and Peter Leppik (10) in double figures.

Sunday started with a dominant 25-9 run before Pakenham closed to within six points at half-time.

Shane Moroney (16 points, eight rebounds), Peter Leppik (12 and 7), and Prince Coleman (13 points) led the scoring as the Thoroughbreds shot nine of 14 from the field in the final term to open up a double-figure margin again.

The Thoroughbreds are away at Craigieburn (third, 3-2) from 1pm on Sunday at Craigieburn Leisure Centre.
