Conferences a good call

[Re: High flying council, Star Weekly, May 20] I have no problem with this form of expenditure. Attendance of conferences related to local government is a necessary and important function of both council officers and councillors. While $83,000 is a lot of money, it is budgeted for and in relation to WCC operating budget it is very minimal. On the other hand, spending what I imagine would have been a fortune on making “spin” videos of non-performing councillors should be objected to.

Speak up about abuse

[Re: Catholic brother’s abuse survivor says she ‘feels no fear’, Online, May 20] It’s never too late to speak up about being sexually abused. Let’s hope that anyone who may have knowledge or may have been harmed by Brother Bernard Hartman will find the courage to come forward and contact law-enforcement agencies, no matter how long ago it happened.

Silence only hurts. By speaking up, there is a chance for healing and exposing the truth, and therefore of protecting others.

Congratulations to a very brave lady. As an ex-student of his, I am appalled by his behaviour.

Council a picture of waste

[Re: Council rejects street cameras, Star Weekly, May 20] Yeah cameras are a waste of money, just like those speed cameras on the freeways … waste of money. Or maybe there is not a dollar reward for these ones.

How about other places? There are other places that need to improve safety, too.

This is a typical response from Wyndham council: “Let’s close our eyes and pretend there is no crime in Wyndham”. They take our money as a wage (way overpaid by the way) and do absolutely zero for it. Maybe they should use the money to give themselves another pay rise. Oh hang on – they do that anyhow.

It’s about time the council considered the health and safety of the residents of this fantastic place.

I do not feel safe walking down Watton Street at any time.

In tune with parking woes

[Re: Hogans Road residents want parking priority, Star Weekly, May 20] You could always get up a community choir and stand out the front and sing Onward Christian Soldiers at the top of your voice and spoil their worship.

It’s the same problem with parking along Sayers Road. The council has erected parking signs but no one polices them.

Throw away the keys

[Re: Lock up or luck out, police warn, Star Weekly, May 20] Absolute disgrace. It’s time the laws were toughened on burglary and also for drug use and possession. We’ve allowed a bunch of self-righteous, irresponsible, blameless scum to run riot in our society.
