Soroptimist International aims to help Wyndham women

Wyndham women looking to help others are being encouraged to join a new service club expanding to the city.

Soroptimist International, a service club that offers support to women and children in need, is seeking to open a branch in Wyndham.

Victorian extension officer Karen Thornton said the club, which would meet monthly, would work on local projects such as scholarship programs or running friendship circles for migrants.

The club needs between 15 and 20 women to join to get off the ground.

Ms Thornton said Soroptimist International wanted to expand to Wyndham because it believed there was a need for such a club in the area.

“When I did some research, there didn’t appear to be a lot in the way of service clubs in Wyndham specifically for women,” she said.

“We felt there was a need for a club where women could support other women and children. There are lots of areas where they need support.”

Ms Thornton said she enjoyed the service aspect of being part of Soroptimist International.

“It means the world to be able to support women and children and I feel very proud of the projects we do,” she said.

“The service side of it is heart-warming.”
