Hoppers Crossing: Hogans Road residents want parking priority

Residents of Hogans Road in Hoppers Crossing have petitioned Wyndham council for residential parking, saying overflow parking from a nearby mosque and church is taking over.

The petition, signed by 21 people, says residents are unable to leave their driveways safely or park on the road on Fridays and Sundays because of the volume of traffic.

It is not the first time the residents have written to the council about the issue and a previous petition was presented to the council two years ago.

A resident, who asked not to be named, told Star Weekly residents had started taking matters into their own hands by placing bollards in front of their houses.

“There is not enough parking in the street for the Virgin Mary Mosque and South West Christian Church,” she said.

“People continue to park across our driveway.

“If we’re out, we don’t come home between mosque and church hours. The congregations are getting too big for the area and we feel it’s a safety issue.”

Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said the council installed parking bay limits in the street in 2013 after the first petition.

She said the limits were aimed at addressing the issue of cars restricting access.

Werribee Islamic Centre president Mohamed Masood said the mosque asked people to obey parking restrictions along Hogans Road.

“If there’s any illegal parking or people block driveways, we always alert them,” he said. “If they don’t listen we call council and police.

“We just advise drivers to move and we have volunteers in Hogans Road to make sure cars are not blocking driveways.

“It’s typically only busy on Friday during the middle of the day and on Sundays, but there aren’t that many cars on the road – just let people worship.”

South West Christian Church did not respond before Star Weekly went to print.

A report on the petition will be presented to council on June 22.
