Big V men: Werribee Devils a chance to turn it around

Werribee Devils need to find their mojo in the Big V basketball men’s championship.

The next three games before the Queen’s birthday break present a massive opportunity for the struggling team to build much-needed momentum.

They face three teams sitting outside the top six, starting with Hume City Broncos at home on Saturday night, and will not face a top-four powerhouse until July.

The draw is starting to open up for the Devils after a rough 2-10 start to the season and they will need to capitalise before they slip into a relegation fight.

“Once we get one, it will, hopefully, domino for us,” Devils guard Jordan Hughes told Star Weekly.

“Hopefully we can get a bit of a roll on, because we’re definitely not in the position we want to be.

“We’re a lot better than what we’re showing.”

The Devils’ woes continued in a double header at the weekend.

They were blown off the court by two title contenders, starting with a 108-67 defeat against Ringwood Hawks on Saturday night and an even harsher 121-75 shellacking at the hands of the Waverley Falcons on Sunday.

Every loss is snowballing into a bigger problem for the Devils.

“For sure we’ve lost confidence,” Hughes said. “Once the streak starts, it’s hard to get out of. We know we’re capable when we play at our best and we’ve just got to get the consistency and confidence back.”

In the women’s division 1, Werribee Devils snapped a run of two losses with a convincing 85-68 win over Hawthorn Magic at Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday night.

The Devils set up the big win with a strong offensive showing in the first half and a miserly third-quarter defensive effort, restricting the Magic to just seven points for the period.

Lydia Brooks had one of the most bizarre statistical lines of the game, scoring just one point but reeling in a whopping 22 rebounds.

The Devils will travel to Craigieburn on Saturday night.
