Hockey: Winless Werribee Tigers ready to pounce

Werribee was “unlucky” – according to its coach Les McAlinden – not to come away with more than a share of the points in a 2-2 draw with WestVic in Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 2 at Presidents Park on Saturday.

Despite starting the season with just a draw and a loss, with the bye in between, McAlinden is not pressing the panic button and insists his side is on the verge of a breakthrough win.

“Two more minutes and we would’ve had them,” he said of the WestVic game.

“We were all over them in the second half, did all the right things but just didn’t finish off.”

The Tigers scored goals in both halves through Morgan Jolly and Lisa Ross. Both were the result of team creations rather than individual brilliance.

“We played really good as a team and moved the ball around perfectly,” McAlinden said.

“The build-up of both goals started in defence and just moved through the channels. They were just really good team goals.”

Goalkeeper Rachel Catania was superb for the Tigers when called upon to make some athletic saves.

Werribee should have no worries notching its first win this weekend when it faces bottom-of-the-ladder Frankston, a side with a horrid one goal for and 24 against record in three games.

“On paper, we don’t look impressive – but watching the videos from the two games it’s a lot different,” McAlinden said.

“We had a good pre-season carnival and played off in a grand final.

“We ironed out the creases from the opening game and everyone played well against WestVic. If we don’t come away with a really good, impressive win [against Frankston], we’ll be disappointed.”

Werribee prevailed 3-2 over WestVic in the men’s Vic League 2 on the back of a double to Josh Pace.
