Lalor MP Joanne Ryan claims a large section of Wyndham Vale has been removed from the latest NBN rollout schedule – and she’ll be writing to federal Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to ask why.
Ms Ryan said the area, which was previously marked as “in the planning stage” for the NBN, was off the latest map.
In recent months, Ms Ryan’s office has been inundated with calls from residents concerned they’ve been left off the roll-out.
As reported by Star Weekly on April 1, Ms Ryan urged residents to speak out about not having access to the internet and their difficulties by taking part in her survey.
One Tarneit resident said they had not been able to get any internet connection at their home.
“We’re told there are no ports available and Telstra will not be releasing any more while NBN is being rolled out,” the resident said.
Another Wyndham resident said poor internet connection was affecting daily lives, especially for their children as they complete their VCE.
Yet another said slow internet speeds made it almost impossible to run their home-based business.
“This area has poor provision and now it’s getting worse, not better,” Ms Ryan said.
The MP has also asked opposition communications spokesman Jason Clare to visit Wyndham before the May budget.
NBN Co chief executive Bill Morrow said the roll-out was still gathering momentum. “More than 300,000 Australian homes and businesses across Australia are already connected and enjoying the benefits of fast broadband,” he said.
“Naturally, some people will be disappointed that they are not included in the latest roll-out.”
