D-Café connects dots for dementia sufferers and families

A new Wyndham-based program is connecting people, families and friends living with dementia or memory loss.

D-Café aims to provide information and social support, bringing people together in a safe and welcoming environment to ask questions, share experiences and develop new friendships.

A Wyndham council staff initiative, the D-Café program includes representatives from Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria and Carers Victoria and provides information, links to support services and relaxation methods.

The council’s disability, ageing and inclusion portfolio holder Cr Michele Wharrie said the program was a much-needed outlet for families dealing with dementia.

“Through the D-Café sessions, people can talk about the issues they face, learn from others in the same situation and deal with the questions that may arise.”

Although more common after the age of 65, dementia can affect people in their 40s and 50s, with Alzheimer’s disease the most common form, making up about 70 per cent of all cases.

While early signs are subtle, these can include progressive and frequent memory loss, confusion, personality change, apathy and withdrawal, and the loss of ability to perform everyday tasks. Once vibrant, outgoing individuals may be reduced to a shadow of their former selves, causing great concern and uncertainty for loved ones.
